Dealing With An Entitled Teen? These Five Strategies Can Help.

teens'In this issue:

Hi Reader,

As a mom of three and an active participant in the parenting world, I hear all the time about how entitled many of today's young people act. Unfortunately, I definitely see evidence on a regular basis that supports these perceptions (yes, even in my own kids from time to time).

But in some ways, I do think it gets overstated. We need to acknowledge that sometimes what gets called "entitlement" is really just typical teen behavior. Teens, by nature, tend to be somewhat self-centered and selfish, and this is simply because their brains aren't fully developed yet.

However, it is also important to be aware of how entitlement can sneak in quietly—when teens start expecting privileges without putting in the effort, or blaming others when things don’t go their way. We need to be careful not to contribute to or validate these attitudes and behaviors.

If you're noticing signs of entitlement in your teen, you're not alone. This stage brings real challenges—but it also gives us real opportunities to help them shift their mindsets and build character.

Until Next Time,
